Are you in or out?

Have you watched the movie clip of Central Intelligence featuring Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart? If not, take a look at it below. In the clip, Bob (portrayed by Dwayne Johnson) asks Calvin (portrayed by Kevin Hart) whether he is on board with Bob's plan to thwart an international espionage deal.

Although I have not seen the movie, the "in or out" clip became popular as it resonates with everyone. Upon watching it, I shared it with my husband Robbie, who resembles Bob, while I see myself as Calvin. I am aware that I may have missed numerous opportunities for shared joy when Robbie was eager for an adventure, but my cautious nature prevented me from joining in the thrill. The Carter James Ranch was one of these adventures where there was no room for hesitation, only immediate action. I was already in but did not know it yet. Fortunately, I eventually embraced the journey with the same enthusiasm as Robbie.

When we bought the ranch, we didn't have a clear vision, but we hoped to preserve the property and prevent it from becoming the next Paola subdivision. It is like the sourdough starter that I still need to feed today. There is still life in the property; it just needs a little consistent attention to become active again. So, we jumped in and began renovating the 1895 farmhouse. That was two years ago, and we aim to finish the first floor by the end of this summer. Most of the house renovation was put on hold as I focused on teaching, and Robbie tended to the cattle and sheep.

Starting in the summer of 2024, I have formally stepped down from my teaching position, and now we are focusing on our ranch once again. You can expect increased activity, although most of the cattle have been relocated to a new property for a time to allow the grass to recover. We plan to transfer the chickens to the ranch soon to help fertilize the pastures. Nevertheless, we must ensure that Mr. Fox does not mistake our actions for serving him his meals.

While tending to the health of the pastures, our next project is to renovate the small house, which will serve as our farm-to-table store. Our deep freezers are in the main house and offer chicken products, including eggs. While most of our beef products are out of stock, more will come in the fall. Here is where you can view our products.

Our vision becomes more defined daily as we contemplate ways to welcome the community to the ranch. Among our concepts are hosting Friday evening pizza nights with an outdoor movie screen and Saturday morning coffee talks to savor the morning dew (or, let's face it, the Kansas humidity). We eventually want to offer ranch tours where you can join us in rotating the animals, collecting the eggs, and fishing the pond. This is a special location where we feel one can relax, unwind, and escape the modern world. Moreover, I find my passion for learning still strong and want to invite people to share their unique talents. Ideally, the farm store will provide a platform for sharing the skills that you possess and that we all are keen to learn more about.

So the only question left to ask the community is, are you in or out?
